BENDIGO – Victoria’s historic goldfields are gearing up for a weekend of off-road action at the end of November with the hosting of the Victorian Cross Triathlon State Championships; a world championship qualifier; and round three of an all new Australian trail running series, Trail Run Australia.
Triathlon Victoria, the state governing body for triathlon have awarded the state championships to the TreX event in Bendigo as part of the Victorian State Series. The 2018/19 Victorian State Series title is awarded to both individuals (State Series Award) and clubs/squads (State Series Shield) based on results from selected multisport events across the 2018/19 season.
The TreX series has long been at the forefront of this unique form of triathlon in Australia which takes the traditional format of the sport and mixes it with a huge helping of heart, guts, mud and dirt as athletes take on a unique challenge with a swim, mountain bike and trail run, where the challenge is as much with mother nature as it is against other athletes.
Victorian championship contenders will tackle a challenging 1,500m swim in the wide expansive waters of beautiful Crusoe Reservoir, followed 30km of heart pumping XC mountain biking in Bendigo Regional Park, and then finishing off with a 10km trail run which challenges runners at every turn as it traverses through the Box Ironbark forests of Number 7 Park, a historic part of Bendigo’s gold mining history.
The cleverly designed reservoir and water purification system was the first of its kind in Australia in supplying treated drinking water to Bendigo’s gold miners of the
1860s. The settling ponds, the basin and channel system can still be seen today as you journey around the Box Ironbark forest, all of which runners can experience as part of TreX Goldfields and Trail Run Australia.
Athletes will also be racing for a place in the team to represent Australia at the ITU World MultiSport Championships to be held in Spain in 2019 with the event also being announced by Triathlon Australia as a world championship qualifier.
Event Director, Robyn Lazenby from In2Adventure, the team who won the successful bid to bring the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to Australia in 2016 told us that;
“We are so thrilled to once again welcome the best of Australian Off Road athletes to Bendigo’s historic goldfields for the Victorian State Championships. The area lends itself so incredibly to all the off road action that TreX can deliver. The trail run is one of the most challenging and diverse of the series, taking in river courses, log runs and steep rocky gullies, taking athletes on a challenging, historic and awe inspiring journey.”
Bendigo was also chosen as the destination to host round three of the newly launched Trail Run Australia series which takes runners to some of the most iconic and scenic destinations in Australia with four races in three states in 2018/19.
And it’s not just a weekend for elite athletes. TreX Cross Triathlon offers courses and distances for all ages and abilities including Standard, Sprint, Junior, Teaser and Dirt Kids events.
Trail Run Australia includes half marathon, 11k and 5k options as well as a free kids’ mud rats event. This makes it an ideal weekend for hardcore racers, weekend warriors, families or those who just want to get into the great outdoors to visit one of Australia’s most scenic and historic regions to enjoy the challenge of off road racing.
The Bendigo Coast MultiSport Festival is proudly supported by the City of Greater Bendigo.
The weekend will take place at Crusoe Reservoir with the TreX Cross Triathlon event taking place on the 24th of November and Trail Run Australia on Sunday 25th. To find out more and be a part of the off road action go to:
