Sunshine Coast MultiSport Festival – 22-23 October – To Be Rescheduled
We are so terribly disappointed that we have to announce that the Sunshine Coast MultiSport Festival due to take place on the 22nd and 23rd of October which includes TreX Sunshine Coast and Trail Run Australia Sunshine Coast will not be able to go ahead this weekend.
For the past two weeks we have been closely monitoring the weather forecast and last week showers were forecast for the event weekend with a forecast of a possible 0 to 10-15mm with only a very low chance that the full amount of 10 to 15mm of rain would occur.
Given this forecast and the fact that the event site has been dry for the past week we were confident that this would not impact the hosting of the event. A contingency plan was developed to keep the event on track in this circumstance.
However, yesterday at around lunch time the forecast for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday changed significantly with forecasts of 15 to 45mm of rain per day predicted. This was escalated by the fact that over 27mm of rain fell at the location yesterday afternoon. Given this significant change in the situation we contacted National Parks to gain their insite into what impact this may have on the permit to conduct the event.
This morning National Parks have advised that the event would not be able to proceed given the current weather conditions as outlined below.
- Predicted heavy rain (30mm Friday and up to 45mm on Saturday 22nd October). This area has already had up to 22 mm in the past 24 hours.
- According to DES Mountain bike policy, all activities must be postponed when soil conditions are significantly saturated.
- Potential safety risks with competitors and spectators accessing the area. This includes emergency service personnel & vehicles.
- Bureau of Meteorology advises public to limit travel due to unfavourable weather conditions.
- As a safety measure QPWS will be closing the trails from this afternoon.
We know that this is so very disappointing for our athletes, our partners, our suppliers and the community groups that we work with, especially as this decision has occurred so close to the event.
We are so upset that this decision has had to be made, and, that given the circumstances it wasn’t possible to make a call earlier to provide more notice to everyone, however, participant safety and respect for the environment always take precedent in decision making in such circumstances. It truly is one of the most challenging things about running events that, even though you try to make the best decisions in the interest of all involved, work around challenges and try and make decision based on the best information available to you at the time, that sometimes there are things that you just cannot control. It really can be heartbreaking for everyone.
We are currently working hard with all our partners including Triathlon Australia, National Parks, SEQ Water, Sunshine Coast Council, Tourism and Events Queensland and our providers to identify a date in the near future for the event and we will keep everyone up to date on progress.
As we said we know this is disappointing but in the big picture, although this does have a significant impact, we can schedule another event date, but there are people who have been devastatingly and irreversibly impacted by the recent rains and our thoughts go out to all of them.
We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and thank you in advance for your understanding.
Best wishes
