SUNSHINE COAST – Brodie Gardner and Connie Silvestri have reigned supreme at the final round of the TreX 2018/19 Series, on the Sunshine Coast.
Ewen Maddock Dam in Landsborough hosted the season-crowning race, which took place a month later than was originally scheduled, due to adverse weather conditions in April.
The Men’s Elite event was a titanic tussle between Gardener and newcomer Casey Munro– who was competing his first off-road triathlon.
Munro took a 2-minute-55-second lead out of the swim leg, but Gardener’s class on the bike shone through, flipping the time deficit to take the lead.
“I knew Casey would be much stronger than me with the swim, but the bike was my chance, and I knew I had to take it, I got the lead, we changed lead again a couple times, but then I had to make the most of the opportunity and fight ahead,” Gardener said after the race.”
He finished in a time of 2:18:00, ahead of Munro 2:20:54.
Meanwhile, young gun Callum Kingston proved he’s one to watch of the future generation, with an impressive third-placed performance of 2:31:13.
Connie Silvestri took-out the Woman’s Crown, battling through the pain barrier to win in a time of 02:59:39
“It was a tough one out there today. There was some doubt whether I’d race, but I just had to. I had to work through injury and battle on. You think to yourself, ‘well I could just stay away and not compete, but you have to give it a go, don’t you?”, Silvestri said following her win.
The Australian representative said it filled her with pride having her Dad, George, there watching on, as she took out the Sunshine Coast event.
