Picture your ultimate triathlon high and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s in store for you at TreX Snowy Mountains.

What a Way to Start the Day!

Arriving for the start you’ll be awe struck as you take your place on the start line on the banks of the crystal clear mountain lake located in the heart of Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa with the spectacular Snowy Mountains providing the backdrop for your awaiting adventure.

Think of a better way to start a day?… we definitely can’t.

After taking the plunge into Lake Crackenback for two laps of the 750m course it’s a short 20m run to Transition before mounting your ride and immersing yourself in the heart of the Thredbo Valley traversing the banks of the Thredbo River on super fun mountain bike trails.

Ride the High!

The MTB course comprises approx 80% grippy, flowing single track as well as rocking berms, bridges, rock gardens and creek crossings.  The undulating fast sections of flowing single track provide very little respite for the legs which will be pumping all the way as technically skilled riders will be able to carry speed through the tight terrain, but strong riders will be able to make up time grinding out the open sections with small pitches and hills.

Get ready for the ultimate post card encounter as every twist and turn offers up a new high-country experience on this 9.5k lap with only the sound of trickling mountain streams to accompany the sound of your pedals turning and legs screaming.  Traverse the snow gum forests, alpine meadows and granite outcrops with views up the Thredbo Valley and out to Ram’s Head Range.  You might even be lucky enough to catch one of the local kangaroos, wombats or echidnas along the way on one of your two laps.

After 28.5k on the bike it’s time to strap on your best trail running shoes, because this course is ready to take you on a wild journey through the Snowies heartland.

Forget the Tarmac… Step into the Trail Running High Life

Tackle creek crossings, our world-famous river run, suspension bridge, tunnels, obstacles and rock scrambles in what is a 3.3k lap of unadulterated trail running heaven as you absorb the alpine air and spectacular view along the way. And, on each of the three laps you’ll discover a new experience at every turn.

It’s a Finish Line High!

After three laps it’s time to return to the heart of the event at Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa ready for a true high-country welcome as your friends and family along with our amazing team of volunteers get ready to welcome you to the finish line as the ‘Rock Star’ you are.

And the BEST part

… the Alpine Larder will be waiting for you at the finish line with hearty country fair, hot pizzas, and the perhaps the best beer you’ll ever taste as you celebrate your amazing achievement with your best mates by your side.

Swim

SWIM COURSE | STANDARD 1500m (2 x 750m Laps)

The swim takes place in the enclosed waters of beautiful Lake Crackenback

WATER TEMPERATURE

The water temperature during February in Lake Crackenback is likely to be between 16 and 20 degrees which means that a wetsuit-optional swim is likely.  As per the ITU Race Competition Rules, in the event that the water temperature is 15.9 degrees or below, the use of wetsuits will be mandatory for all athletes.

Technical Officials will measure the water temperature prior to each race and results will determine if wetsuits are permitted.  The water temperature and ruling about wetsuits will be published on  the event notice board and via the public address system.

Full details about water temperatures and wetsuit use can be found on p20 of the ITU Competition Rules.

WATER CLARITY

The swim location ‘Lake Crackenback’ itself lies in the heart of the resort.  It is a fresh water lake fed by mountain springs and a lot of the accommodation is located over the lake, so will provide a birdseye view of the swim.

Water clarity is fair, however there are some small reed patches in places.

TIDES, CURRENTS & CONDITIONS

Being an inland lake there is no current or tides to contend with, however, on a windy day the lake surface can become slightly choppy.

SWIM START

The race start will be a running start from the sandy beach into the water.  The water deepens quickly from the shore, minimal dolphin dives will be required.

Being a smaller water body the distance to the first turn buoy is approx. 150m.

SWIM COURSE

The swim course traverses the circumference of the lake  in a clockwise direction and is marked with 1.5m cylinder and 1m pyramid buoys.

  • Keep ORANGE BUOYS on the LEFT shoulder
  • Keep YELLOW BUOYS on the RIGHT shoulder
SWIM EXIT

Lap 1: The exit at the beach is a narrow grassed area.  At the end of lap 1 swimmers have a short 50m run to reenter the water at the same location as the swim start.

To Transition: The run from the swim exit to transition is a short 25m run on the grass.

Transition

TRANSITION

Transition is an area where athletes transition from one leg to the next ie from Swim to MTB and MTB to Run.

Transition is located on the Village Green opposite the lake.   There is a 25m run from the swim exit to the transition entry.  Racks are signed and each  athlete has a 50cm wide allocation.   Mountain Bikes are racked by the seat.

After registering, take your equipment to the transition area.  There is limited space in transition and competitors are asked to take all due care and precautions when entering and exiting the area.

IMPORTANT: Only competitors are permitted in the Transition Area.

For transition opening and closing times please refer to the Event Timetable.

TRANSITION ENTRY

After registration, take your bike, helmet, running shoes, drinks and any other required equipment to the transition area.

Please ensure the following prior to entry:

  1. MTB Number is attached securely to the bike handlebars; and
  2. Bike helmet is fitted and fastened to your head.

BIKE SAFETY CHECKS

When entering the Transition Area an official from Triathlon Australia will complete a safety check on your bike and helmet.  Please ensure that your bike is in good working order, your helmet is fitted and fastened correctly and handle bar ends are plugged.

SET UP

Place bikes where indicated by the transition signage.  Set up race equipment next to your bike. Space is limited to 50cm per athlete so please consider other competitors and keep equipment neat and tidy.  Mountain Bikes are racked by the seat.

For safety, bags or boxes with equipment are not permitted in the Transition Area.  These will be removed if they are taken in.

COURTESY IN THE TRANSITION AREA

We’re all at TreX to have a great day out!  Each athlete has a 50cm allocated space to rack bikes & leave any kit required during the event. Please keep equipment neat and tidy and please don’t move or interfere with any other competitors gear or bike in the transition area.  If there is an issue with another athletes bike or equipment please refer the issue to a Triathlon Australia official.

GET TO KNOW THE TRANSITION AREA

It’s important to know where to go in the transition area for the start and finish of each leg. It’s preferable to find this out BEFORE the event rather than during the event.  Take some time in the morning to check out:

  • The Swim Entry and where your bike is located from the entry point;
  • The Bike Exit;
  • The Bike Entry and how to return to your allocated bike space; and
  • The Run Exit.

TRANSITION CLOSURE

The Transition Area will be cleared at closure time. Participants must have placed their equipment and cleared the area by this time. If athletes arrive at Transition at closure time they will not be permitted to take part in the event.

This will be enforced as it is a Triathlon Australia safety and regulatory requirement that the Transition is free from competitors before the start of the event and all participants are required to attend the pre-race brief.

Please refer to the Event Timetable for closure times

BIKE COLLECTION & TRANSITION AREA CLEARANCE

The Transition Area will be open for bike collection when the final mountain bike has returned from the course.  Please listen for announcements at Race HQ.

DIRT KIDS TRANSITION AREA

Dirt Kids is a non-competitive event and is all about giving our young champions of tomorrow a chance to have load of fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

Please listen out for the announcements at Race HQ for Transition placement times and event start times.  Transition rules are relaxed and we welcome parents and friends to encourage participants in a really positive and helpful way.

Aid Stations, Feed Zones, Litter

AID STATIONS

There will be two aid stations on the 3.3km Trail Run lap which runners will pass at approx. 1.4k and 3.3k.

Aid stations will offer water  in cups.

MOUNTAIN BIKE FEED ZONE

The Coaches Zone for triathlon has been renamed the ‘Feed Zone’ for all events.

  1. The MTB Feed Zone is not an Aid Station. The MTB Feed Zone is an area where athletes can access their own hydration/nutrition during the event.
  2. Hydration/nutrition can be picked up directly by the athlete, or it may be handed to them by a designated assistant as the athlete passes through the feed zone ONLY.
  3. Note: This is NOT a drop zone for unrequired items that an athlete took out of transition e.g. hydration packs, clothes, accessories, etc.
  4. The Start and End of the feed zone will be clearly signed. Please place feed zone items between this signage only.
PLACEMENT & COLLECTION OF HYDRATION/NUTRITION
  1. Hydration/Nutrition may placed in Feed Zone prior to the event.
  2. The athlete is responsible for collecting the items immediately after the event. All uncollected items will be delivered to the LOC Lost Property.

LITTER ZONES

We are extremely privileged to be granted permission to race in this naturally beautiful area and want to ensure that we keep the area in its original condition.

To make it easier for athletes litter zones have been implemented on the course where litter can be deposited.  Each litter zone is clearly signed with a start and end point.  Litter may be deposited between these signs only.

Marshals and video cameras on the course will be monitoring this closely and penalties and/or disqualification will result, so do the right thing and don’t spoil your race.

There is one aid stations on the 1km Trail Run lap which runners will pass just after departing transition.

Aid stations will offer water  in cups.

Dirt Kids Course | 50 – 1.5 – 500

Course

Dirt Kids Course | 50 | 1.5 | 500

Our Dirt Kids event is the feature event of the day where we welcome our young champions of tomorrow to the TreX Tri Family.

Dirt Kids is a short, fun, welcoming participation event aimed at getting our young champions off the beaten track with a short swim, a fun bike leg on the paths around the lake and a short run to the finish.

Our Dirt Kids mums and dads are more than welcome to swim, ride and/or run the legs with our Dirt Kids and assist in the transition from swim to bike to run.  However, having said that, most of our Dirt Kids, just love having a go on their own and we have lots of Triathlon Australia officials and team members to be with them and ensure they have an awesome, time from start to finish.

The transition area for our Dirt Kids is VERY relaxed.  We ask our Dirt Kids to leave their bikes and equipment on the open grassed area next to the swim start just before the start of the event, so there’s no need to rack bikes in the official transition area in the morning.

This is a fun, relaxed participation event where smiles are the only uniform.

Elite/Open

ABOUT THE TREX ELITE/OPEN CATEGORY

TreX has an Elite/Open Category.  This category is for those athletes wishing to race at a higher level of competition and typically includes athletes at the top level of the sport in Australia.  Any athlete wishing to race at a higher level of competition and take a step up from the age group competition is eligible to enter Open/Elite.

Where a prize purse is offered at events, this is awarded to winners in the Open/Elite Category.

For athletes considering entering the Open/Elite event, we recommend referring to results from previous years which will offer a good indication as to the typical standard for the Open/Elite category for a particular event.

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA GUIDELINES

Open is a category that has prize money of $10,000 or below the “Professional/Elite” threshold as per the TA Professional/Elite Licence Policy (ie Less than $10k). This category is open to professional and age group athletes. This applies to the majority of TreX events.

In the circumstance where a TreX event offers prize money greater than $10,000 the category will be defined as either “Professional” or “Elite”.  In this circumstance, prize money is only available to appropriate licenced athletes under the TA Professional/Elite Licence Policy.

Start & Finish

START/FINISH & COURSE BRIEF

COURSE & SAFETY BRIEF | COMPULSORY FOR ALL ATHLETES

The Course & Safety Brief will take place at Race HQ.  We value the safety of our TreX Tri family and want to ensure that every athlete has a safe and enjoyable race.

We also want to ensure that each athletes has the most up to date information about the course and any late changes.  For this reason all athletes are required to attend the briefing.  It is important, and the Race Director reserves the right to refuse entry to any participant who chooses not to attend.

The first wave will start soon after the course and safety brief is finished.

WAVE STARTS

To avoid having 300 swimmers starting at once, waves starts determine the official start time of each age group within each race distance.

Wave starts are  determined by the number of athletes in each age group and/or gender and are typically scheduled 1 to 3 minutes apart, depending on the course and location.  Full details are published on the notice board at Race HQ.  Please check times on the day and ensure you are at the start line with plenty of time to spare.

EVENT START

TreX will start at the beach on the banks of Lake Crackenback.

Please check the wave start times on the notice board at Race HQ and ensure you are at the start line ready for your race call well in advance.

EVENT FINISH

The finish is always a special place for our athletes, so be sure to make your finish photo one to remember and get ready to celebrate your achievements.  Our volunteers will be serving fruit and water and collecting timing chips in the finish area.

TIMING CHIP COLLECTION

Timing chips are to be returned to the Volunteers in the athlete recovery area. If a timing chip has been lost on the course during the event, please notify the timing personnel immediately after crossing the finish line.  Dirt Master contenders please refer to the Dirt Master information.

FIRST AID

A dedicated first aid tent will be set up at the finish line for any first aid needs.

BIKE COLLECTION

Transition will be opened for competitors to collect their own bikes when the final mountain bike rider has returned to transition.  Competitors are to wear their race numbers to verify bike collection.

Rules

TRIATHLON AUSTRALIA RACE RULES

A good and fair race always includes a few rules and to ensure you enjoy your time at the event.  TreX events are governed by the rules and regulations as set out by Triathlon Australia.

It’s a good idea to have a read of the document below BEFORE the start of the event.  These rules will be applied by Triathlon Australia officials and unfortunately ignorance isn’t an excuse that can be accepted.

  3. Compete within your abilities.

SAFETY ON THE COURSE

  • If you’re not confident with a section of the track dismount your bike and walk if you feel more comfortable. Please remember to keep to the left so other riders can pass easily.
  • Ride/run on the left hand side of tracks.
  • Compete within your limits.
  • Let common sense and courtesy prevail. We want to see you safe and sound at the end of the race.

Please be respectful of this to avoid being asked to remove tents etc.

THE DRIVE TO THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS
  • View Map & Directions

Driving the Kosciuszko Alpine Way is remarkable. The route winds its way through quaint country towns and alpine villages, with breathtaking views of the majestic mountains and sparkling rivers.  Take a stopover along the way at one of the many tourist spots including:

COOMA

Have a break in Cooma and visit the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre and unravel the design and technology of the world famous Snowy Scheme.  Walk along Cooma’s Lambie Street to the Raglan Regional Art Gallery, passing the historic stone and timber architecture of the town.

Visit Cooma’s railhead, a functioning attraction with trains running to a regular timetable. Take a detour along Tourist Drive 1 south of Cooma and drive to the top of Mt Gladstone, 3km south of Cooma. Heidi’s Tea House at the top of Mt Gladstone provides great gluhwein and 360° views over
Cooma, the Monaro, the Snowy Mountains and Mt Kosciuszko.

BERRIDALE

Continuing towards the Snowies and just past the Snowy Mountains airport lies Berridale, a cross-roads village that features a local winery and cafés. Take some time to relax and enjoy the peacefulness.

LAKE JINDABYNE

As you get closer to the Snowy Mountains spectacular Lake Jindabyne comes into view. Stop at the Jindabyne Dam wall for  some great photos and scenic views. In Jindabyne itself visit the Snowy Region Visitor Centre for park passes and maps, and to view an interpretive display of the towns
amazing history.

In Jindabyne cycle along the lake’s edge, take a scenic or fishing boat charter, take to the air in a scenic flight or hire a runabout or catamaran for time on the water.

In Banjo Patterson park visit the monument to Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki, and learn about his amazing contribution to the region. Fish for Rainbow and Brown Trout, the occasional Brookie or Atlantic salmon from the lake, or in one of the many surrounding streams.

SOME TIPS WHEN DRIVING

1. In Australia we drive on the left – quite important to remember this one
2. Try to avoid driving around dusk and dawn as these are the main times for the local wildlife, including some very big roos, to be out on the road.  You don’t want to tangle with them, even in a vehicle.
3. Don’t underestimate distances. Australia is a big country and travelling between major towns and cities can be 100’s of kms (1 mile = 1.6km).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cross Triathlon just for Elite Athletes?

The answer to this question is an overwhelming “NO!”

The national TreX X-Triathlon series has been running for thirteen years and currently welcomes all manner of participants from 6 years to 80, from those who have never taken part in a triathlon, to mums, dads and families, weekend warriors and those who just love the outdoors and want to try something new.

It really is a family event and offers something for all level of participants including:

Dirt Kids (6-11yrs)

A non-competitive event for 6 to 11 year olds. Typical distances include 50m Swim, 1km XC MTB and 500m Run.

Junior (10-15yrs) Course

This is an event designed for younger participants and new participants who want to come and try a x-triathlon for the first time in a shorter event format.  Distances typically include 150m Swim, 5km XC MTB & 2km Trail Run.

Teaser (16+yrs) Course

This is an event designed for new participants who want to come and try a x-triathlon for the first time in a shorter event format.  Distances typically include 150m Swim, 5km XC MTB & 2km Trail Run.

Sprint Course (14+yrs)

This course includes all the action of the long course event, but with a shorter distance.  Usually including a 400m Swim, 10-15km XC MTB and 4-6km Trail Run.

Standard Course (16+yrs)

The standard course is typically a 1,500m Swim, 30km Cross Country Mountain Bike and 10km Trail Run.

What is different from on road triathlon?

Although governed by the same rules and guidelines of on-road triathlon, there are some key differences:

The Swim

The swim course is quite similar to the on road version of the sport.  Competitors find themselves plunging into dams, lakes, rivers and the ocean and sometimes have to get in touch with their ‘dirty’ side as swim entries and exits can be muddy and boggy.  Reeds, lilies’ and sometimes wildlife can be a part of the swim leg in cross triathlon, which just adds to the adventure of the event.

The Mountain Bike Course

The mountain bike course is an eclectic combination of trails which can include fire trails and 4WD tracks, bush trails, sand. rocks and single track (no tarmac here!).  Each course is different and unlike road triathlons, a mountain bike course is very different every time you ride it.  It requires a combination of skill, speed, strength and strategy to stay at the pointy end of the field.

In the TreX series a lot of the course is suitable for new comers and those new to mountain biking, however there will also be technical sections to challenge riders mountain bike skills and to add a touch of excitement to the course.  If a rider does not feel confident, that’s fine, there’s always the option to walk the more technical sections (they are not usually too long) and start riding again when they feel comfortable.

Course distance can often be deceptive for those unfamiliar with mountain biking.  10km on a mountain bike track is very different to 10km on the road.  Riders must constantly be focussed on the trails as they twist and turn and challenge with pinchy climbs, log roll overs, bridges, rock gardens and water crossings.  There is no cruising or freewheeling when you get off road.  Each athlete must be in the moment and engaged with the course from start to finish.  Arguably, it is this element of the sport that keeps competitors coming back for more and more action.

No Such Thing as Drafting

Due to the nature of the mountain bike leg drafting does not come into play in the cross version of the sport.  However, courtesy on the mountain bike is governed by recognised mountain bike guidelines such as:

  • Where possible riders must keep to the left of the trails and allow others to pass;
  • When passing riders should alert the person in front with a friendly shout “On your left”, or “On your right” depending on which side they intend to pass; and
  • When being passed, and it is safe to do so, riders will move to the left or right as requested.

The Trail Run

The trail run is where cross triathlon really shines by offering participants a true off-road experience.  Trail run courses cover some incredibly diverse terrain and showcases some of Australia’s most spectacular bush and coastal areas.

Typically the trail run includes trails, tracks, creek crossings, steep craggy ascents, rough descents, sandy banks, rocky scrambles and sometimes there’s no tracks at all!  This means that competitors must stay focused every step of the way as they challenge themselves to run, scramble and climb to the welcome site of the finish arch and an appreciative crowd at Race HQ

What is the Elite/Open Category

Open is a category that has prize money below the “Professional/Elite” threshold as per the TA Professional/Elite Licence Policy (ie Less than $10k).

What are the Race Rules?

There are a number of rules that govern the sport of Triathlon in general and specifically Cross Triathlon.

Triathlon Australia governs the sport within Australia and apply the rules at all TreX events, a copy of the rules can be viewed HERE.

Internationally the International Triathlon Union (ITU) governs all aspects of the sport of Triathlon, all international guidelines and rules can be found HERE.

What happens if an event is sold out?

  • Numbers are limited at each event for participant safety and environmental reasons.
  • When an event is sold out a notice will be posted on the NEWS PAGE of the TreX website.
  • No entries will be accepted after the capacity has been reached.
  • No ‘On The Day’ entries will be accepted when the event is full.
  • Where possible event organisers will make every effort to advise participants when entries are close to capacity via TreX newsletters and on the NEWS PAGE of the website, however entries may close without notice.

What Equipment Will I Need For The Event?

Participants are required to be self sufficient for the event and will require the following equipment on the day:

  • Off Road Trail Running Shoes
  • Swimmers
  • Goggles (if desired)
  • Swimming Cap (At events where swim caps are provided in race packs, these swim caps must be worn during the swim leg)

  • Hydration Pack or Water Bottles
  • Running / Riding Shirt / Vest
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat

  • An electronic timing chip on an ankle strap;
  • A race number to be worn on the front of your torso for the run leg;
  • A bike number to be attached to the front handle bars or stem of your bike;
  • Special giveaways from our event partners (where applicable);

Can I carry a music device (MP3, iPod, etc)?

As stated in Triathlon Australia’s rules and regulations competitors are not permitted to race with any music devices including mobile phones, MP3 players, earphones etc. Competitors found with any device such as these will be disqualified.

Is water provided on the course?

Aid stations are made available on the trail run course approximately every 2 km and also at the Finish area. Competitors are expected to be self sufficient for water on the bike leg.

Please note at some events there is limited or no drinking water on site so on these occasions competitors are asked to being enough water and drinks for personal consumption to last before, during and after the race.

Can I wear a hydration pack?

Yes, hydration packs can be worn. If you do decide to wear one though on either the bike or run leg you must keep it on until you return to the transition area at the end of the bike leg or cross the finish line at the end of the run leg. Dropping it off at anytime during either leg would incur a penalty.

What is a wave start?

In order to avoid having every competitor entering the water at the same time, competitors are divided into “waves” to give you plenty of room to swim and enter transition smoothly.

Waves will start at approximate 3 minute intervals.

Make sure you check the notice boards at Race HQ for your wave start time.

Can I wear a wetsuit?

The water temperature will be measured by officials from Triathlon Australia. For age-group competitors, if the water is 22 degrees or above then it will be a non-wetsuit swim. If the water temperature is below 22 degrees competitors will be given the option of wearing a wetsuit.  This level is raised to 24.6 degrees for those in the 60+ categories.

It is not compulsory to wear a wetsuit if the water temperature is below 22 degrees.

As per the Triathlon Australia Race Rules, the temperature limits for the use of wetsuits and maximum time to be in the water can be found under Section 2 Swimming Conduct in the Race Rules here: AUS Triathlon Race Rules

Do I have to wear clip in bike shoes?

You do not have to wear ‘clip in’ bike shoes.  Depending on your confidence and skill level on a mountain bike, ‘cages’ or standard flat pedals with running shoes are another options.

These may also speed up your transition times from bike to run.

Do I need a mountain bike?

You will require an off road bike as all the riding takes place on fire trails, dirt tracks and some single track.  The course is not suitable for a standard road bike.

GRAVEL / CYCLO CROSS BIKES

Gravel bikes are permitted by AUS Triathlon to be used at TreX, however, where this event is a National Championship, State Championship or WQE gravel / cyclo cross bike riders will not be eligible for National or State Championship awards or WQE qualification points.
They will however be eligible for TreX awards and prizes

  • Medals and prizes can only be given to the actual recipient at presentations, other persons can not collect them on behalf of the recipient.

How do I become a Triathlon Australia member?

To become a member of AUS Triathlon visit their website at www.triathlon.org.au

There are many benefits including connection with your local club, qualified coaches and insurance for your training and racing

If you are not a Triathlon Australia Member for the season in which you are racing, you will need a One Day License.

One Day Licenses are automatically added to your entry at time of purchase if you do not enter a valid Triathlon Australia number at an additional cost.

One Day Licence (ODL) is a means by which participants who are not Triathlon Australia Annual Members, contribute to the costs of running the sport of triathlon.

It also ensures they are covered by an appropriate level of insurance while they are participating at events.

Can I enter as a team?

An option to take part as a team is offered for all triathlon courses including Teaser, Sprint and Standard.

The team can be made up of two or three people.  One person does the swim, one does the mountain bike and the other completes the trail run.  For two person teams, one person completes two of these disciplines.

The timing chip is passed between team members at the end of their leg in the designated ‘team’ area within transition.
